Project Overview
Rutson Energy successfully designed, installed, and commissioned a 115kWp grid-tied solar system at BOMI KAIST, a leading research and technology hub in Konza City. The system provides clean energy, reducing reliance on Kenya’s power grid and supporting sustainable development.

Challenges & Solutions
One of the key challenges in this project was weather variability, which required the system to be designed with real-time monitoring capabilities to adjust energy production efficiently. Additionally, grid stability issues posed a potential risk of power backfeeding during grid failures. To counter this, we integrated anti-islanding protection, ensuring the system automatically disconnects from the grid when necessary. Another challenge was limited rooftop space, which we addressed by using high-efficiency solar panels, allowing maximum power generation within the available area.
Benefits & Impact
The 115kWp system significantly reduces electricity costs, allowing BOMI KAIST to allocate more resources toward research and innovation. By relying on solar energy, the institution contributes to Kenya’s clean energy transition, lowering carbon emissions and promoting environmental sustainability. Furthermore, the enhanced energy security ensures uninterrupted power for the facility, preventing disruptions in academic and research activities.
