Project Overview

Rutson Energy installed seven solar-powered borehole pumps in Taita Taveta and Kitui counties to provide a sustainable water supply for rural communities. This World Bank-funded initiative supports agriculture, livestock, and domestic water use, ensuring water security in arid regions.

Challenges & Solutions

The remote location of the boreholes made transportation and logistics difficult, requiring careful planning and the use of local workforce support for installation. Additionally, variable water table levels in the region necessitated the selection of high-efficiency solar pumps capable of adapting to fluctuating water depths. Lastly, harsh environmental conditions such as dust and high temperatures required weather-resistant equipment and regular maintenance plans.

Benefits & Impact

This project has transformed access to clean water for thousands of residents in Taita Taveta and Kitui, supporting agriculture and livestock while reducing dependence on unreliable water sources. The use of solar energy eliminates fuel costs, making the system cost-effective and sustainable for the long term. Additionally, the project enhances climate resilience in drought-prone areas, ensuring year-round water availability.
